High winds affect power network

Update: 8:20pm

Power has now been restored to more than 2300 customers whose service was disrupted by the high winds in Canterbury this afternoon.

Orion crews are progressively restoring power to the remaining 450 customers currently without power.

As it is necessary to wait to gain safe access to some areas as the firefighting continues, Orion expects that a small number of customers, around 30, will be without power overnight.

Orion hopes to restore all services as soon as possible tomorrow.

For updates any time of the day or night, people can call Orion’s 24/7 Contact Centre on 03 363 9898, or visit www.oriongroup.co.nz.

Orion’s network is being affected by high winds that have caused trees and branches to fall through power lines cutting power in a number of rural areas.

There are currently more than 2,800 customers without power in mainly rural locations, including Lincoln, West Melton, Tai Tapu, Akaroa and in Lyttelton.

Orion crews are working as quickly and safely as they can to restore power and ensure public safety.

Orion urges anyone in Christchurch, Banks Peninsula and central Canterbury who sees a fallen power line to stay well clear and call 0800 363 9898 immediately.

Customers are advised to visit www.oriongroup.co.nz or call 03 363 9898 for more information.
