Earth Hour
29 March 2008
On Saturday 29 March 2008 at 8pm, Christchurch joined cities around the world in Earth Hour. Christchurch was the first New Zealand city to commit to Earth Hour and Orion was proud to be associated with it as a primary supporter.
Earth Hour is an initiative to demonstrate the importance of people taking simple steps every day to collectively reduce carbon emissions. During Earth Hour millions of people and businesses reduced their electricity consumption by turning off lights and other power appliances.
The amount of electricity used in Christchurch depends on temperature and weather conditions. Based on the average temperature in the city during Earth Hour, we estimate that the Christchurch community reduced electricity use during Earth Hour by:
| % electricity saved |
12.8% |
| Amount of electricity saved |
36.6 MWh |
| Estimated emissions saved * |
8.4 tCO2-e | This is equivalent to the electricity used annually in 4.1 homes or the emissions saved from reducing unleaded petrol use by 3597 litres *.
| * |
based on CO2 equivalent emission factors provided by the Ministry of Economic Development, Energy Greenhouse Gas Emissions 1996-2006. | Visit the Earth Hour website for more information about this important event.
