Orion gets behind Ecobulbs subsidy

September 8 2008

Orion is supporting a subsidised Ecobulbs campaign in central Canterbury, with the aim to help households in its network area save money on their power bills and reduce electricity use.

The central Canterbury electricity distribution network company has partnered with Meridian Energy, Energy Mad and the Electricity Commission to offer a range of energy efficient Ecobulbs to households at subsidised prices. The promotion was recently mailed out to Meridian customers in Orion’s network area.

Three types of Ecobulbs have been subsidised for the programme – 15W spiral (replaces 60W or 75W incandescent) 13W enclosed (replaces 40W or 60W incandescent) and the 15W mini downlight (replaces 50W halogen fixture and bulb).

The subsidised Ecobulbs can be purchased from participating Pak‘nSave, New World and Four Square supermarkets and Shell outlets. Mercury Energy customers in Auckland and FlyBuys customers throughout New Zealand have also received vouchers as part of the promotion – however vouchers are not needed to purchase the subsidised bulbs at participating outlets.

The 13W enclosed and 15W mini downlight Ecobulbs are new Energy Mad products which were released into the New Zealand market at the launch of the Government’s 2008 Efficient Lighting Project on September 2. This is the Government’s largest energy efficiency project, with the aim to replace incandescent bulbs throughout New Zealand with more energy efficient lighting.

Orion Energy Projects Manager Stephen Godfrey says that Orion has recognised the environmental and financial benefits of energy efficiency programmes for more than a decade.

“We have supported similar energy efficient light bulb campaigns in previous years, and we’re pleased to be involved again as part of the 2008 Efficient Lighting Project. To achieve a truly sustainably energy infrastructure, our society must be more energy efficient,” Mr Godfrey says.
