Yuyin KuehOrion NZ is proud to congratulate its Network Planning Engineer Yuyin Kueh who was awarded the ‘2022 Young Energy Professional of the Year’ at the New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards, held last night at Te Pae in Christchurch.

29-year-old Kueh impressed the judging panel with her achievements in just seven years in the industry, becoming someone to “rely on to solve any challenge”.

Kueh’s meticulous attention to detail and data, vision of the big picture and curiosity to create new solutions make her an outstanding example of a young energy professional.

Kueh has designed critical infrastructure upgrades, delivered projects for some of NZ’s largest companies, undertaken ground-breaking research and helped other young women achieve their dream to be engineers too.

Orion Group Chief Executive Nigel Barbour said Yuyin’s analysis of the impact EVs will have on Orion’s low voltage network as ‘the very best’ he’s seen in his career.

“Her research on our LV network has given Orion phenomenal insight through identifying our 236 most vulnerable LV subnetworks and prompted an eight year $11.6 million major reinforcement programme for Orion’s network.

“Her colleagues admire her work ethic and the efforts she makes to inspire others - particularly young women - to join our sector.

“Yuyin personifies all of Orion’s values (Be respectful, Be courageous, Lead by example and Focus on the big picture) and inspires all of us to be our best,” says Barbour.

Orion was also recognised at the Awards last night as a finalist for the Low-carbon Future Award for its pioneering mahi to decarbonise our generators fuelled by used chip fat and with static synchronous compensators – Statcoms.

“We entered these awards to share the stories of our inspiring people and projects that are making a difference in our world,” says Barbour.

“It is great to see our people recognised for their smart, innovative approaches to solving today’s challenges.”
