Milton to Halswell cable upgrade

Cable route Stage Two current works

Orion, Connetics and Isaac Construction are installing a new 66kV underground power cable in Southern Christchurch.

We’re currently working on Milton Street between Selwyn Street and Strickland Street to install cable ducts which will make the installation of cable at a later date easier.

“We're installing a new underground power cable between the Milton Street substation and Halswell substation on Sparks Road to strengthen our network, says Orion GM Electricity Network Steve Macdonald.

“This follows on from the completion of the cabling between Bromley and Milton Street, and the opening of the Milton Switching Station late last year, and other similar projects since the earthquakes.”

This project delivers on Orion’s continued commitment to build a resilient electricity supply for Ōtautahi Christchurch and recognises the impact another earthquake or other major natural event could have.

This new underground power cable is crucial for strengthening our electricity network. This project will ensure a reliable and resilient power network for our customers, supporting the growing demand for electricity in our region.

“We’re always mindful that roadworks are disruptive, so we’re working in stages to minimise the impact on the community as much as possible. We'll be working in stages during 2025 to complete this work, and currently we are working on stage 2,” says Steve.

Detour routes will be signposted. Please follow the signs and instructions from our crew.
