Standards for network connection

The network connection standard [PDF, 1.4 MB] outlines technical requirements for connections to our electricity distribution network. It is relevant to all of our stakeholders, including electricity retailers, contractors, developers, customers, consultants and advisers.

The network connection standard covers:

  • getting connected
  • the design and construction of our network
  • customer electrical installations
  • service levels
  • network operation

The network connection standard outlines how we accommodate and manage electrical loads.

To allow us to maintain the safety and quality of our electricity distribution network, prior to livening your connection must comply with the following documents and regulations:

Congestion management policy

The Electricity Authority has recently consulted on an increase to a 10 kW per phase default export limit for small-scale generation connections.

Orion has carried out studies across our network to see where this higher limit can be supported, and where it can’t. Dynamic capability will continue to evolve as Orion's understanding of network capabilities and constraints increases.

From 1 April 2026, Orion has introduced a Congestion Management Policy that outlines how we intend to manage Export Congestion. All connections capable of exporting to our network will be governed by this policy.
