Export limits

Maximising exports from small‑scale distributed generation

Following the Electricity Authority’s recent announcement to expand the permissible voltage range from ±6% to ±10%, and with ongoing initiatives to enhance visibility of our low voltage network, we are working to maximise exports from small-scale distributed generation on Orion’s network.

From 1 April 2026, expect to see updates to our existing export limits that aim to increase how much you can export to our network where local network capacity allows.

Our approach and rationale

Preliminary modelling indicates that increasing export allowance in some areas of the low voltage network may create constraints even with a low number of generation connections. Because of this, we are taking an equitable approach to approving increases in export limits.

Without this approach, early applicants would be able to claim all the export capacity, stopping later applicants' ability to export.

What’s changing

From 1 April 2026 new and existing installations will be able to apply for an increased export limit. Where studies show sufficient capacity, we intend to allow export at or above 10kW per phase. These will be assessed on a case-by-case basis with respect to the local network capacity.

Additionally the export capacity of your current system may restrict your ability to increase your export limit. Please check the capacity of your system to understand if you are able to apply to increase your export limit.

All applications for increased export capacity whether they are for new or existing generation must be carried out in line with the correct certification and compliance requirements.

Updated inverter list
An updated approved inverter list will be released on 1 April 2026. A transition period will apply, during which installers must shift to using inverters that meet new requirements for all new installations.

Network studies and future roadmap

We are undertaking detailed studies of our low voltage network to understand the capacity available to accept additional export from generation installations. It is our intent to maximise export into our network in a way that supports equitable access and a safe and reliable network. Our studies will inform the export limits we advise for your area of connection. These will change over time which dictates the need for us to move from static limits to dynamic limits in the future.

We’ll continue to provide updates on our website as this work progresses.
