Power cable upgrade

Connetics drum new 66kV cable

Underground power cable upgrade for a resilient future

Orion, Connetics and Isaac Construction are set to start work to install cable ducts along Sparks Road in early August.

This work is part of a major construction project to install a new 66kV underground power cable between the Milton Street substation and the Halswell substation on Sparks Road, a 5.6km route.

This project delivers on Orion’s continued commitment to build a resilient electricity supply for Ōtautahi Christchurch and recognises the impact another earthquake or other major natural event could have.

Work is powering ahead, and we’ve successfully completed the installation of cable ducts along Milton Street, and work is nearing completion on Frankleigh Street and through the Lyttelton Street intersection.

We now need to install cable ducts on Sparks Road and across the Heathcote River.

From 7 August – 22 August, Sparks Road will be one-way travelling from Hendersons Road to Lyttelton Street. There will be no entry to Sparks Road for westbound traffic at Hoon Hay Road and Lyttelton Street.

Once we’ve crossed the river, we’ll reopen Sparks Road between Hendersons and Hoon Hay Road to two-way traffic.

“We’re extremely grateful to our local community for their patience while we carry out this essential work. We’ll be doing ongoing engagement with them to ensure they’re aware of the work programme and what impacts it may have for them,” says Orion General Manager Electricity Network Steve Macdonald.

We encourage everyone to follow all signs and instructions for the safety of all road users and our crew.
