We'll be carrying out thermographic surveys of some high-voltage overhead lines and zone substations. Using specialised equipment, the helicopter can detect heat that may indicate wear or developing faults in equipment on our network. The information collected helps us plan maintenance and keep the power on for our community.
Some parts of our network are difficult or unsafe to access on foot or by vehicle. In these locations, helicopters provide a safe and efficient way to inspect infrastructure, particularly along 66kV transmission routes and in more remote areas. Survey areas will include parts of Banks Peninsula, Heathcote, Bromley, Barnett Park, Hornby and Halswell.
These surveys are an important part of maintaining a safe, secure and reliable electricity network. The work is carried out during winter when demand on the network is typically higher, helping us identify any issues while the network is under load.
The helicopter will be flying near power lines while surveys are underway. You may notice increased aircraft activity and some temporary noise during the work. This work is expected to take place on 12 and 13 August, provided the weather is suitable.
Our survey teams follow approved safety procedures and industry guidelines to help minimise impacts on people, property and animals.
All flights will be conducted by Garden City Helicopters and will comply with New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations and privacy guidelines.
