Pricing to encourage load management

Our pricing structure is designed to reflect the cost of delivering electricity across our network during peak demand periods. This structure results in savings to customers who reduce their load during these periods.  Ways that customers do this include:

  • having their hot water cylinders turned off by us during peak times;

  • having night storage heaters or efficient forms of heating such as heat pumps in the home;

  • businesses using backup generation to lower the load on our network.

Our pricing to what we call ‘general customers’ (homes and small to medium sized businesses) and ‘major customers’ (large businesses) varies to reflect the load profile and metering differences. We have specific pricing information for each group.
